Delia Eleanor Bruce was born 04 January 1809 in Wilks County, North Caroline to Benjamin S Bruce and Mary Crysel.
Delia Eleanor Bruce married John Marion Berry in Carmi, White County, Illinois, but the exact date in February 1825 differs slightly.
Three boys were born to the couple as shown in the 1830 census; John Bruce 11/09/1827, Thomas B in 1828, and James R in 1830. Two more boys followed; Richard Albert in April 1832 and Francis Marion 03/09/1834. All the boys were born in White County, Illinois.
Berry researchers have maintained that John M and Delia Berry had one female child. Although some suggest the birth of a girl as the first child, no female child appears in the 1830 census in the John Berry household. If the firstborn were a girl, she evidently died before 1830. She could have been adopted into another family, but there is no rationale for this explanation. The Chesley Williams household in the1840 census shows two females <5, who are not listed on the 1850 census, but with the birth of Francis Marion 03/09/1834 and the death of John M 07/01/1834, it is unlikely that Delia would have had a child by John Marion who was <5 in 1840.
John M died 01 July 1834 in White County, Illinois leaving Delia with five boys ages 8-1/2 to 3 months. ??? has a copy of a receipt to Delia for items she purchased at the estate sale of her husband on 08 October 1834. The estate was administered by John Bruce, probably Delia's brother, John. Probate records have been transcribed.
Delia married Chesley Williams 03 December 1836, who had children from a previous marriage. In the 1850 census the family consisted of Chesley 50, Delia 39, Isaac B 18, Albert R Berry 18, Margaret 15, and Chesley R 13. Although listed as age 13 in 1850, Chesley R gives his age as 24 in 1860, 35 in 1870, 45 in 1880, and 65 in 1900. He is probably the son of Chesley and his first wife, but I’m not sure. Delia and Chesley did have a son Thomas W in 1851. Delia’s son Richard named one of his sons Chesley Edward.
Delia died about 01 June 1889. Cause of death was listed as old age, voluntary starvation. She was buried at Bethlehem Cemetery in Omaha Township, Gallatin County, Illinois.
